Is purified wastewater safe?

Yes. Wastewater that has been treated using the advanced water purification (AWP) process does not have any more known adverse health effects than conventional water treatment methods and is is currently used as a safe source of drinking water in several major cities throughout the US.

The Pure Water Demonstration Facility is designed to thoroughly test the purified water from the advanced water treatment system. This purified wastewater is subject to stringent water quality tests monitored by the California Department of Public Health. Reclaimed wastewater that has been purified using the AWP process is found to be, and considered by many experts, cleaner and safer than any water that is currently imported to our region.  This holds true even for the vast majority (226 of 232) of pharmaceuticals that are hard to eradicate through ordinary water treatment methods (see page 108 of this document for the figures).
